Affiliate Marketing Payouts Explained: Networks, Cookies & Attribution
A confirmed sale doesn't automatically mean a confirmed payout. Here's what actually determines whether a commission gets credited to you — and why some legitimately don't.
The cookie window is the clock, not a guarantee
When someone clicks your affiliate link, a cookie starts a countdown — anywhere from 24 hours (Amazon Associates) to 180 days depending on the program. If the customer buys within that window, the sale is typically attributed to you. If they buy after it expires, it usually isn't, even if your content is what convinced them.
Sub-IDs are what make a payout traceable back to you
A sub-ID is a small tag appended to your affiliate link identifying exactly where that click came from — a specific video, post, or placement. Without one, a network can confirm a sale happened but can't tell you which piece of content actually drove it, which makes it impossible to know what to make more of.
Postbacks are how "confirmed" becomes "paid"
When a network confirms a sale, many can automatically notify your tracking system via a server-to-server "postback" carrying your sub-ID and the commission amount — this is what allows a payout to show up automatically rather than requiring you to manually check a network dashboard and copy numbers into a spreadsheet.
Why a sale sometimes doesn't get credited
Ad blockers or cross-device browsing (clicking on a phone, buying on a laptop) can break cookie-based attribution entirely. Returns and cancellations also reverse commissions after the fact, which is why payout status usually moves through pending → confirmed → paid rather than being final the moment a sale happens.
What "recurring" changes about all of this
On a recurring-commission program, the same customer generates a new payout each billing cycle without you doing anything further — which is why recurring programs are worth tracking closely over the long term, not just checking once after the first sale.
